As much as I love you all, it was nice to get away from the blog and Twitter and the noise of the Internet during my trip to Amsterdam. But now I’m back, knee-deep in my Google Reader and Twitter links to bring you my favorites.

This weekend I’m running my favorite 5K race, the Freihofer’s Race for Women in Albany, N.Y. (which I wrote about last year). Should be a fun one.

Why bloggers should consider audience

You know what irks me? It’s been a year since I posted on my travel blog, and it still gets more hits than this writing blog.

Okay, not quite a year. Since January, I’ve posted twice on Inkslinging in Africa — once in March and again in May. But I’m working hard to increase readership for this blog, and I can’t even keep up with my dead travel blog.

During just the month of December, the travel blog got nearly 15,000 hits. With no new posts! You know how many this writing blog got? Not quite 3,000.

(In all fairness, part of the reason the travel blog still gets so many hits is because one of the maps I included in a blog post is uber-popular on Google.)

But there’s a lesson here — other than how using images can drive traffic to your blog. The success of a blog depends largely on audience.

This writing blog is aimed at people who want to learn what it’s like to write and publish a book. Most of my readers are writers embarking on a similar journey. The audience ain’t that big.

My travel blog, however, has a huge potential audience. Other travelers read it, but they’re a small piece of the audience pie. Inkslinging in Africa, like my book, is aimed at people who are interested in what it’s like to travel alone as a woman and/or in Africa. It also appeals to people who dream of taking a leap in their own lives, like I did when I left my job to backpack for six months. And who wouldn’t want to leave the nine-to-five life behind to pursue a dream? That covers a whole lot of people.

So. The lesson. If you’re about to start a blog, or already have one and want to increase readership, ask yourself about audience. Are you blogging about a topic that has a lot of potential readers?

There’s also a lesson here for me personally. I should think about blogging again on the travel blog. If I’m hoping to use these blogs as a vehicle for selling my book (First I’ve gotta finish writing and sign with an agent and find a publisher. Minor details.), I should use the blog that has more readers.

Why aren’t I doing that already? Because I want my travel blog to be about me traveling, and right now I’m living in upstate New York writing my book. For me to pick up my travel blog again, I’d need to go somewhere.

Sounds like a good reason to embark on another extended trip, don’t ya think?

Lessons from Julie & Julia

Just saw the movie, Julie & Julia. Several friends had recommended it to me, in part because Julie’s blog became a book — exactly the feat I’m trying to pull off.

What’d I learn from it?

Julie’s blog was successful largely because she put her soul into it. She wasn’t just writing about recipes, she was writing about her life. Julie’s readers felt like they knew her. I remind myself how important this is every time I feel like deleting an embarrassing scene from my book. Today my mom read one of my chapters, just for fun. She liked it, of course — she’s my mom, how could she not? But she was surprised by two paragraphs in which I revealed a bit about my love life. Yes, I explained to her, it’s personal. But those personal parts are what make the book great. Without them, it’s a boring travelogue.

Julie got a book deal because of a newspaper story. This is a lesson for all of us — getting pieces of your book into newspapers, magazines, blogs, or other publications will increase your chances of being published. Put your work out there so a literary agent or editor will come to you. Julie got lucky; she was interviewed by a newspaper reporter. But you can make your own luck by submitting stories to publications. While traveling, I freelanced for newspapers, and now I’m using pieces of those stories, or experiences I had while reporting them, for my book. Of course, at the time I didn’t know I would write a memoir. But getting your byline out there can never hurt.

It took Julia a long while to get her book published. But her perseverance paid off. After much hard work and a few rejections, her cookbook was finally published — and now it’s in its 49th printing. How’s that for success?

How to turn your blog into a book

The movie Julie & Julia started out a blog, then became a book (and finally, a film).

It’s the most well-known example of a story that went from blog to book. But that tale — which, ironically, is partly about a frustrated writer — isn’t the only one. An increasing number of blogs are being published as books.

I’m one of the writers trying to make that happen. Whenever I talk about transforming my travel blog, Inkslinging in Africa, into a memoir, I say my blog is serving as a “skeleton” for my book. That’s because creating a book from a blog requires much more work than simply pasting together posts.

So how does one go about turning a blog into a book? What does it take?

Figure out your theme. Penelope Trunk, who got a six-figure book deal from her blog, says the main difference between blog posts and a book is that the latter has to have a Big Idea. She’s right. For me, that Big Idea is a theme, a thread that pulls all of my mini stories into one narrative, a story with a point.

Consider your voice. I love my blog voice. Blogging comes naturally to me. I’m funny on my travel blog, maybe even funnier than I am in real life. But my blog voice does not always translate into literary voice. Why? Because it’s choppy. On my blogs, I write in short sentences, quick paragraphs that are easy to read. But my book has to read smoothly, with longer paragraphs, because I’m writing entire chapters, not posts. A book is 300 pages, not eight paragraphs like a blog post. That means my book voice is slightly different than my blog voice. Maybe your blog voice translates directly to your book. But maybe it doesn’t. Either way, this is something to think about.

Add transitions. On my blog, it was okay for me to be in South Africa one day, Madagascar the next. That doesn’t work for my book. Taking the reader along for the ride is more literal, and smooth transitions are important.

Double — or triple — the stories. The book is about more than what I wrote on the blog. Otherwise, why would you buy it? Why would you buy my book if you could just scroll through my travel blog for the exact same stories? My book has got to offer more stories, more introspection, more something. Whatever your something is, offer more.

Add context. On my blog, I have an About Me section and a sidebar with links that explain background about why I left my job to travel. In the book, that’s gotta be in paragraph form, part of the story. I have to include background in an interesting way because the reader can’t just click around my book, choosing links that provide context.

Improve and reuse. Even blog posts that make it into the book must be rewritten better than they were on the blog. Think of the blog as a rough draft. The book version needs more description, dialogue, pretty much everything I neglected to include when I quickly wrote the post in an Internet cafe in Cameroon, trying to finish it before the power went out. For example, here’s a post I wrote for my travel blog; here’s the better version I wrote for the book.

Don’t forget to use the blog to sell your book. Write about the popularity of your blog in your book proposal. Inkslinging in Africa got 50,000 page views during its first six months. That may not be a huge number by some standards, but it’s impressive for an independent start-up, and it shows there’s a market for my stories.

Writers’ Roundup

I haven’t given my book enough attention this week. In between struggling with Chapter One, I’ve been working on a few freelance pieces since, well, they pay the bills and right now the book doesn’t.

I’ve got this great travel piece about Madagascar’s parks, a how-to-go-there-yourself article I began writing months ago and am finally getting around to selling. Only thing is, Madagascar’s had a political uprising since I was there before Christmas. I doubt the country is terribly unsafe, but I do believe it’s going to be difficult now to sell this piece to a magazine. Readers might be wary of visiting a country that just suffered a coup.

Anyway, I’ve been distracted this week with feeding my bank account, but I’ve still got a few links for you:
